Attractions

The island offers lively resorts with a range of water sports, as well as lush plantations and the awesome grandeur of the Haleakala Volcano. And if that was not enough to get you excited from December until April, Maui’s favorite visitors are its residents. The humpback whales, 6,000 strong, migrate from their summer feeding grounds in Alaska to the warm and sheltered waters of the Hawaiian Islands. While here they mate, nurse their newborn calves, and thrill their human counterparts who delight in observing them from one of Maui’s many whale watch cruises or from vantage points on the shore. Be sure to book your whale watching trip with our Sightseeing Add on Specialist!

Restaurants

Dining in Maui is overwhelming. Culinary styles hail from around the world, and some styles are unique to Maui alone. In one week—and in one town—a visitor can feast on Thai and French cuisine, fresh game and fresh fish, sandwiches, burritos and, of course, a few scoops of ridiculously decadent ice cream. Old favorites such as Leilanis on the Beach and Reilleys Steaks & Seafood feature live music, drink specials and amazing views. The lovely Hula Grill cant be beaten for ambience—and the fresh seafood wins local awards, if not international ones.

Shopping

Yes, the Valley Isle offers a wide variety of shopping adventures, from large malls to quaint mom-and-pop shops. The largest mall on the island is the Queen Kaahumanu Center in Kahului (just minutes from the Kahului Airport). Here is where you’ll find the island’s only major department stores—Sears and Macy’s—as well as more than 100 other shops and restaurants. Also in Kahului is the Maui Mall, which offers more than 40 shops and eateries. South Maui has the 150,000-square-foot mall at Wailea, and a beautifully designed shopping complex located at the Wailea Resort also.

Weather

There are many reasons for Maui’s famous warm weather, not least of which is the southern latitude. Maui is approximately 1400 miles north of the equator, which is in an area on the planet that has high sun during the entire year. This allows plentiful amounts of sunshine to beam down on the island. The warm ocean keeps the overlying atmosphere from cooling significantly…ensuring the near perfect weather conditions that Maui enjoys.
