You can do everything from Whale & Dolphin watching to going to art museums. There’s so much for all the family to do in Cape Cod. The Cape is a very family-oriented vacation place to enjoy seafood, beaches, bicycling, camping, antique shopping, and lots more.
The whale and dolphin tours usually last about three to four hours and you can usually get some great shots of humpback whales as they tend to come quite close to the boats, which really gets the excitement going in kids and adults alike!
The whole family will also get a kick out of the Whydah Pirate Museum in Provincetown. The Whydah sank in 1717 and to this day remains the only authenticated pirate ship ever salvaged. This museum houses some of the 100,000 items that were found including coins, jewellery and weapons!
With all the beaches in sight, it makes Martha’s Vineyard a relaxation paradise. Locals feel that they are such a world apart from Cape Cod and often refer to the mainland as “America”. Take a walk to Chappaquiddick, an enchanting 14-acre Japanese garden with walkways, drooping Cherry trees, wooden bridges and the noisiest birds on earth. You’ll need to take the 3-car-3-minute ‘Chappy Ferry’ from Edgartown.
When in Nantucket, be sure to visit the Nantucket Atheneum if you’re into history. It is the island’s unique library. The entrance is a sight in itself – resembling Greek architecture. The building houses the “abolitionist meetings of yesterday to the environment film series of today”. Other museums in the area include the Nantucket Whaling Museum where you’ll see a 46 foot skeleton of a Sperm Whale that washed up on the shores of Nantucket on New Year’s Day in 1998.
No trip to Salem is complete without visiting the Salem Witch Museum. This museum examines one of the most enduring and emotional events in American History – the Witch Trials of 1692. Visitors can experience the drama of the dark times through life size stages, lighting and disturbing narration. The whole presentation is based on actual trial documents so you’re in for a scare! Other sights in the area include the Peabody Essex Museum, the Salem Maritime National Historic Site and the House of the Seven Gables.
