Without a doubt, Graceland, Elvis Presley’s mansion/museum, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Memphis. Visitors to Graceland are given the opportunity to tour Elvis’ mansion, visit his grave and even view his collection of automobiles and airplanes. The National Civil Rights Museum and the Gibson Guitar Factory showcase are popular sightseeing options.
Make sure you visit Sun Studio which is where Elvis Presley made his first record and Johnny Cash and many more music greats recorded most of their hits. It’s still a functioning recording studio to this day and there are tours of this National Landmark up to seven times a day.
Head down to Beale Street, which is probably Memphis’ most famous street and the hub for more than 25 clubs and shops. You will find everything here, from Memphis souvenirs, authentic Memphis food or party into the night listening to live music. Day or night, Beale Street is the place to be!
To experience some serious Southern comfort, Memphis is up there as one of the best cities in America. The slow-cooked, pulled-pork sandwiches served at the landmark Corky’s Bar-B-Q are a favorite with both locals and tourists. If you’re looking for a more upmarket dining experience white tablecloth dining is best in East Memphis, and for something more casual, choose among a cluster of welcoming little eateries around the square in Collierville.
One of the largest celebrations of the city is “Memphis in May”. This is a month-long series of events that promotes Memphis’ heritage and outreach of the people far beyond the city’s borders. There are four events – the Beale Street Music Festival, International Week, The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, and the Sunset Symphony. The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is the largest pork barbecue-cooking contest in the world.
“Carnival Memphis” usually occurs during June and is similar to Mardi Gras. It is a series of parties and festivities that salutes various aspects of Memphis and its industries.
The Mississippi River runs through Memphis and riverboat cruises, canoe rentals and other water activities are widely available. Some of the original homes in The Victorian Village have now become museums and are open to the public during the day. One of the most famous – The Woodruff-Fontaine House – is now a popular choice for functions and private parties.
