Introduction

Toronto, located in the province of Ontario, is Canada’s largest City and one of North America’s most lively and attractive cities. It is incredibly clean, safe and easy city to get around, either on foot or by public transport, making it an especially great destination for families as most attractions are child friendly.

It's also a hugely diverse and multicultural city, with a big emphasis on arts and cultural activities. Add to that plenty of sites and a fantastic mix of restaurants and you'll see why Toronto is such an interesting city to visit.

Attractions

The CN Tower is Toronto’s Iconic Landmark and the tallest free-standing building in North America. Take the glass elevator to the top and step precariously onto the glass floored observation deck. The revolving restaurant offers incredible views as the sun sets over the city.
Take a tour of Canada’s Majestic castle, Casa Loma, complete with rooms decorated with European splendour and elegance, secret passages, soaring battlements and beautiful Gardens.
Check out the world’s largest totem pole (it’s over 100 years old) along with loads of other artefacts, specimens and exhibitions at the Royal Ontario Museum.
Ontario Science Centre has some fascinating exhibits including a rainforest, a tornado machine, soundproof tunnels and a 360degree Omnimax movie theatre.
Toronto Zoo, located on the outskirts of the city, is renowned as one of the best in the world.
A great way to see all the famous attractions is to get the Toronto City Pass (Prices as of Dec09 Adult: €42/ Child: €27). The pass is valid for 9 Day and includes the CN Tower, Toronto Zoo, Casa Loma, Museum and Science Centre. There is also a Hop On/Hop Off tour bus with commentary that runs continuously and stops near all the major hotels.
No trip to Toronto would be complete without taking a day trip to Niagara Falls only 1:30hrs away. The best views are said to be on the Canadian side and you can find out more in the Areas of Interest Section.

Restaurants

Little Italy, Chinatown, the distillery district, Greektown and the harbourfront all have restaurants catering for every kind of pallet; steakhouses, sushi bars, chocolate bistros, Thai, Italian, French and fusion. Where everywhere you go you’ll meet with very hospitable souls and vibrant nightlife.
Immerse yourself in Indian culture and authentic food at the Gerrard India Bazaar. Chow down on fantastic cuisine with curries and spices galore and browse through stalls of colourful saris and more spiritual souvenirs.

Queen Street West, as Toronto bohemian heart, has very fashionable restaurants and bars like the Rivoli and the Horseshoe (Toronto’s equivalent to Whelan’s in Dublin). It’s a great place to enjoy a brewski while hanging out and listening to, potentially, the next big thing.

Shopping

Downtown Toronto is a shopping paradise. The Eaton Centre on Yonge St. has become a tourist attraction in itself with its dramatic glass-domed atrium. It’s also got around 320 shops and restaurants to make it worth a visit. You’ll finds all the fashion and flare of the usual stores; H&M, Abercrombie, Zara etc along with home-grown gems like the Roots Store and The Bay department store, showcase Canadian designers.

Yonge St. is the longest street in Canada, runs right through the city and has plenty of space for great shops. It also has the new Dundas Square, a unique urban entertainment hub and a great place to take a breather from manic shopping.

Queen Street West is home to lots of smaller, some independent and infinitely edgier clothing stores. It’s a great place to get something unique to show off at home. The harbourfront has a complex of shops and restaurants on the beautiful lake Ontario and of course there’s as much underground as there is up on the streets! Shops line the series of connecting tunnels around the metro stations for weather proof shopping.

Weather

Winter starts to take hold in early December with a 50/50 chance of a white christmas. Toronto certinaly gets cold and windy but the weather is not as severe as in many other cities, wram up warm and you`ll be able to brave the elements.

Spring is in the air by mid-April and so begins Baseball season and a more outdoor society. By May the winter woolies will be long gone as Patio season starts in many restaurants.

Summer Temperatures can range from 20c -35c and some very hot and humid days. Downpours are not uncommon and often come unexpectedly.

September and October are the best weather months; pleasantly warm temperatures and very little rain.
